Hello all - I am new to BariatricTV.com.  I found you guys through a iTunes search.  This is a great resource, thank you!

So - I have a concern for all you experienced folks out there.  I am about 3 weeks out and have stopped losing weight.  I know this is a journey so I am trying not to feel defeated - but after all the sacrifices I am making I damn well want to see something for it!

I was concerned that it might be because my body is shutting down in starvation mode so I have really been trying to eat more, now that I can, instead of just powering through 3 protein drinks a day.  I am getting all my required protein and fluids.  Eating is a bit harder.  Eating now just seems so unappealing.  And - I am still pretty swollen on the inside and my portions are ridiculously small.  I can barely make it through one egg white.  I have fallen back in love with miso soup...in addition to a variety of other soups.

I have also been trying to make sure my daily walks are more aerobic now that I am getting my energy back.

Is this weight loss stop normal?  Should I stop panicking?

Thank you!

Smiley YES stop panicking  Smiley Smiley Smiley

I think many RNYers will back me up when I say it's so common it'd be unusual if you didn't hit a stall around this point.

Don't worry, your body is being made to burn its fat and all sorts of chemical and hormonal reactions are taking place.

Unless you can defy the laws of physics, you are still burning fat - it's just not showing on the scales - it could be water retention (from hormones, salt in food, exercise.....loads of reasons!), it could be changes in muscle or whatever.

Just think - if you are not eating enough to provide your body with energy it HAS to burn your fat to keep you alive, breathing and moving.

I know what you mean about wanting to see results after all you've put yourself through, I felt the same.

Just relax a bit - look after your water, then your protien, exercise as much as is comfortable for you and DON'T try to stuff youself - it will only hurt.

The pounds will start to drop away soon as long as you stick with the plan.

It sounds like you're doing fine - especially if you've got the energy for daily walks.

Let us know when you break your stall,
Take care.

I am two weeks post-op Realize band.  At my first post-op visit, my surgeon's assistant warned me not to be concerned when I start eating.  She advised that, once I start consuming food, my body will hold onto it because it is still in "starvation mode".  She further advised that this would last about one week.  So, dear Kiersti, take heart.  Wait it out.  Keep a food journal.  Keep doing what you're supposed to be doing.  Our success should not be measured by our weight loss but by our obedience to the "rules".  If we do the right things, the weight will come off.

Good luck.

Yep - totally normal!  Grin  But first WELCOME from Sacramento, CA!!

I 'paused' at about 3 weeks out and it seems like at least one week per month my body pauses. Your body has just gone through a MAJOR replumbing.  So not just with the healing it has to do, but the 'What the He!!' happened to me is also going on. Just relax and work the program.  Protein first, then complex carbs... Get your fluids in and take you vitamins!  NO drinking with your meals!  Everything else will fall into place... remember this is a new life style, not a diet - so you have time  Grin

I don't recall weighing myself outside of the drs. office until I was told I was in the clear.  Even now I'm almost 3 mths out and I rarely weigh myself.  I think of it as a treat to weigh myself and see the loss.  A couple of weeks ago I  maintained the same weight for a week straight.  I'm not worried.  It happens.  Now if I go to my next checkup and get my as* chewed I will be more worried.

Concentrate on getting your food and water in.  Remember that you are still in the healing process too.

It will all work out just fine.

I stalled at 3 weeks, I think everyone does unfortunately. I know I panicked too but it does start coming off again only a bit slower. Slow and steady is normal.

Hang in there!

I'm totally feeling your pain!

As of today I am 5 weeks post op.  I've been stuck on a stall for the last 2 weeks!  As soon as I got off the liquids and moved on to the soft foods I stopped losing the weight.

I finally just lost another 2lbs.  I almost cried this morning when I got on the scale.  I have been freaked out for the last two weeks because as you said, you dont want to feel like you went through all of this for nothing.  I was feeling the same way.

I knew this would happen going into all of this.  Its funny how you can educate yourself so much but as soon as youre in the drivers seat you seem to forget that the things you are going through you already knew to expect and not to worry about.  lol

I think the reason I freaked out is because of hearing about people who had the surgery 3 years ago and only ever lost 30lbs.  I dont want to be one of those people.

Anyway, dont fret.  Its normal.  So dont freak out if you dont see the scale move for a week or longer.

Thank you all!  I hadn't heard this as a normal stage and am comforted that others go through this too.

Thanks again!

The first stall will come at weeks 3 or 4.  It can last for a couple of weeks and is completely normal.  You will not be the only one that the surgery didn't work for.  It will happen.  You will hit many stalls along the way.  Just keep doing what you are suppose to be doing and you will continue to lose.  Don't freak out.  Honest!  It will happen.

Hi Kiersti -

Welcome to BTV..

As the others have said, this is totally normal.. And will happen a few more times as you make your way through this first year.  I would suggest that you start measuring yourself now.  You may stall on the scales but your body will continue to drop the inches and if you can see that on a measuring tape it will help to alleviate some of the stress of watching that scale going nowhere.

If you follow the rules you cannot fail.  Simple as that.  So.. try to not panic - this time next month you will be amazed at how far you have come.
