I started on the treadmill shortly after surgery.  I also started doing some core work starting about 3 weeks out on my fitness ball, and using some of the smaller weights (5 lbs) in some upper body and arm exercises.   Now I do just about everything, and the elder twin daughter and I are working toward running a 5 K in spring.  (not to win it mind you, just to be able to jog the whole way)

Walking outdoors is great, but I love getting on the treadmill... especially in the 90+ degree heat and lack of humidity.  Walking in air conditioning is a great deal easier.
