First, Dr. Joya in Puerto Vallarta was definitely great - great surgeon - I only met him twice - once before surgery, and once after.  His team, though, were just as wonderful and I saw them often - every single day, there were three doctors from the team that were in my room at least once checking on me, and nurses every couple hours putting pain meds in my iv and checking me out, etc.  He has a psychologist on his team - she visited me the day of my surgery to make sure I was in the right frame of mind and well-researched; of course, she realized that I was well-researched.  Wink  She also came in the day after my surgery to check on me and chit chat for a few.

One of the most impressive things – after I got out of the hospital on Thursday, one of the doctors on the team said he’d check in on me.  I thought he meant he’d phone the hotel.  On Friday morning and Saturday morning before I flew out, that doctor came to the hotel and talked personally to me to make sure I was okay.  Can’t find THAT type of “house call” in the US, huh?

The hospital facilities were nice.  I had a private room, it had a comfy recliner and a loveseat in there.  TV was boring – almost all in Spanish.  It was an interesting experience. The first night was incredibly uncomfortable (my surgery wasn’t til about 5 p.m., so I arrived back in the room about 8 ).  Not huge pain – just very uncomfortable with the gas, so I couldn’t rest – it was right up under my ribs.

After that, I was fine – got let loose Thursday afternoon, and felt slightly nauseous that evening when trying warm broth for the first time, but it passed quickly and I let it cool the next morning, which helped a lot.

At present, I’m not having any pain or discomfort.  I’m learning how my new tummy talks though LOL.  Rather than a stomach growl telling me I’m hungry, I have this kind of tight pain under my sternum, as if where my stomach meets the esophagus, it is tightening.  Oddly, that appears to be the same when I’m feeling full.  I haven’t had the opportunity on liquids yet to feel a sense of fullness, per se, but if I eat too many bites of jello, for example, too quickly, that same tightness happens.  Interesting!

I took a walk around the mall with a friend of mine today – only day I didn’t walk outside so far has been yesterday – I was busy moving around my apartment, doing laundry and such, but no real exertion.  Today, more walking, and I swept my porch, which was also good exertion, because it was filthy – full of webs, dirt, etc.  I was sweating when I was finished with that, lemme tellya!

Okay, here’s my question.  I weighed Sunday afternoon.  It said 267 lbs, which was 21 lbs under what I had started with on July 8 at the beginning of my pre-op diet.  It was 12 lbs under where I weighed on Tuesday before my surgery.  However, I weighed yesterday morning and it was up to 268 lbs, and this morning was 269.  WTH??  Is this normal, like my body is just kind of regulating because I starved for a few days in PV as it was difficult to find the right clear liquids?

Today, I backed up a bit.  I’ve had mostly clear nearly calorie free liquids, like Propel fitness water, I had six bites of brothy soup at lunch, and for dinner, I’ve had one Unjury protein powder chicken flavor soup thing, as I need to start thinking about the protein now that I’m a week out.  Maybe I was drinking too much diluted juice (it was diluted 75% water, 25% apple juice, for example)?  Or was my body just regulating?  Did you experience anything like that?

Of course, it gave me the fears that I was going to be the only person in history that this surgery wasn’t going to work for, but I told myself that was silly.  Tomorrow, I start recording my “full liquid” diet, which I start then, in Thedailyplate or on sparkpeople if they have a place for it.  I don’t want to drink too many calories.

Well, you are only a week out! I would chalk it up to healing and your body adjusting to the new way things are situated.

I did the same thing at first.  It's like you expect to lose 50 lbs instantly because you had the surgery. It's hard to get out of that mindset.

As long as you are following drs. directions, getting in your protein, and water - you will be fine.  Just be patient and let your body heal for a few weeks.

I vote that no one here should step on their scales for the first two week after surgery. It sure would save a lot of undo stress. :-)

Lots of reason your weight may be up a pound or two. Are you getting in enough fluids? if not..your body will hold on to what it's got.

Backed Up?  After surgery...your BM's can be unpredictable for months.  You are still mostly doing liquids so you may skip a day or two or three....ain't nothing to "move" as they say. :-)

The good news, at least for me..was eventually your bm's become regular again.

You can pretty much set a clock by mine. :-) the funny thing was it was also about the time I arrived at work every morning so there were plenty of morning sprints into the bathroom!!!! :-)

Thanks ladies Smiley

I know, I know Toni, I'm guilty of the same thing I've watched nearly all of we newbies do, and I even knew better having seen it time and again from everyone else.

I'll relax.  I'll TRY not to step on the scale at least until this upcoming Sunday - maybe make it a weekly thing instead of daily.

Tomorrow, my focus is to get in my protein on the full liquids diet.  Yay, I can have my favorite protein shakes again! (EAS, from wal mart and other stores - high protein and tasty!)

I'm going walking with friends tomorrow afternoon, if it doesn't storm - even if so, we might walk around a shopping center instead of outdoors.  Then it's to a local thai place where I will be able to eat the coconut milk juice part out of the tom kha soup (my favorite).   Yummy!

During the day, I'm re-arranging my closet with the smaller sizes in the back, and the larger in the front, so as they get too big, I can just hand them down to a friend of mine. Smiley

I'll relax.  I promise.  Maybe.  Okay, I don't promise, but I'll do my best to stay off the scale! Grin

I agree with all that Toni said.  The scale will drive you absolutely nuts if you let it!  In a few more weeks you'll look back on this post and just shake your head at yourself.  Proceed as your doctor has given you orders to do.  Don't step on the scale for a while.  Concentrate on healing and resting up after your surgery.  Concentrate on water and protein.  The rest will fall into place.

I'm inclined to think that you may be getting a lot of sodium in your soups, which would cause you to retain water.

AONE:  You know, that's true - there is a lot of sodium in broths and soups, and I do feel a lot like I'm retaining water.  In fact, (WARNING, GIRL TALK), I had my period the same week as surgery, which was last week, but I've felt for two days like it's about to start just because of feeling swollen and like I'm bloated.

Good thing is, I won't have to rely on those broths.  Now I can have my protein shakes, which are lower in sodium, and I'll look for lower sodium soups.

CYNDY:  Yeah, I know  Embarrassed  I tend to obsess on the scale.  Partly, I think, because back in the diet day, if I didn't weigh every day, I'd make an excuse to eat something out of my plan and get derailed.  So I took the advice to weigh daily and average the loss each week.  I have a spreadsheet now, so I dont need to worry so much about that.

And I'm glad you're getting going on The Daily Plate. I started the week of my surgery, and I'm so glad I did! It keeps me honest.

Well, I WAS going on thedailyplate LOL - however, I already belong to Sparkpeople.com, and they have a nutrition tracker, too, which tracks calories, protein, carbs, etc., so I'm using that one instead.  Smiley

Sounds like you are off to a great start. I wouldn't worry about the scales just now. Yor body is probably hanging onto fluids. Like someone else said, watch the sodium if you can. Just make sure that you are getting enough good fluids to keep hydrated. Our bodies hold onto fluids when we are not getting enough.
You doing great! Cheesy

I am so glad to see you are back.  Don't worry.  I have had some up and down days and a 5 day "mini-stall" since my surgery on 6/30/09.  It messes with your head but it will work for you.  Don't worry.

Thanks Kelly - I'm working on just doing exactly what I need to do, recording my daily liquid, calorie, and protein intake.
