I'd like to see a new board for medical issues related to WLS.   Seems some of us have secondary issues, or issues that have been uncovered as a result of our WLS.  Right now I've been having issues with hyperparathyroidism, which relates to calcium and vitamin D absorption.

I'd really like to know how many people on the board get their PTH tested, and the incidence of high PTH.  I've been reading medial studies on this today, and we probably have a better resource here on the message boards (larger numbers of patients) than they do in the test studies.

So my question is this:  is everyone routinely getting their PTH tested?  Is there a significant number of WLS patients with high PTH? are the high PTHs symptomatic?

I've been doing research and seen quite a few situations where parathyroid problems are correlated with WLS.  After going through numerous medical journals, however, I'm more convinced that having WLS is uncovering more PTH issues because we're routinely checked for calcium, and not that WLS triggers parathyroid issues.

anyway, the doc now thinks that the pain isn't parathyroid related... and that we have to continue to look elsewhere.   But I knew a few Freaks who'd had similar symptoms, so I thought I'd put that all out there and see what we came up with.

You know there is so much research showing that vit D deficiency is SO much more common than anyone every thought. So, you took the words out of my mouth when you said that most likely WLS is finding previously undiagnosed PTH and Vit D issues. I know my vit D was low prior to surgery.

Now that I'm on my post bypass vitamins, my D level has consistently climbed. I think I'm up to 60 from 18.

It's a great reminder though for everybody to take a good multivitamin since we just arent in the sun as much as our ancestors were.

I got me some Vitamin D from Bariatric Advantage.. I don't know if it's psychosymatic or what.. but I 'think' I feel much better since I have been taking them

And the odd thing is - I didn't feel bad before I started taking them.. but actually feel better now.
