Hi

I'm Suzette. I am having lap RNY at Catholic Medical Center in Manchester, NH on Nov 10, 2009! I found your site about a week ago; I have watched your fantastic episodes and I am almost caught up, through episode 42.

I guess I am like most almost or already freaks out there: Overweight most of my life, morbidly obese at least half that time; spouse; parent; working full time; trying to juggle and chosen the "vice" of food to attempt to deal with it all. Like everyone here, I've run the gammit of "diets". Diet Center? (Hey! I haven't found anyone who has done this one? Any Diet Center alumns out there?  Wink )Weight Watchers? (uh, double digit attempts) Gym memberships? (Almost double digits) Jenny Craig? Nurtisystem? (Dudes/Dudettes, that one lasted all of 10 lbs...the food made me SICK! ) Slimfast? Cabbage Soup Diet?  (Ack, that lasted ONE meal...disgusting) LAWL?

And how could I possibly forget the "I'll watch what I'll eat, exercise and do it 'the old fashioned' way" (uh, triple digit attempts, I'd say).

So...here I am, ready to go to really make the "old fashioned way" work for me (heh..with a little help of my new freakness). I have researched WLS for over a year, been involved in the pre-op program for well over 6 months. Until two months ago, I was absolutely, positively CONVINCED that I would have lapband. I would never, ever, EVER consider doing THAT (RNY) to myself. Never. No.

Well....research, doctor's visits, careful soul searching, has led me to the conclusion that THAT (RNY) is exactly the tool for me. So now, I am eating my words. Slowly, of course.

Well, at least that is the next habit I need to work on changing.  Cheesy

Welcome Suzette!  Glad you found us..  And Nov 10th is almost here!  Yeah for you.. Yep.. I can totally relate with all of your attempts, above.. Would lose weight then gain it all back.. plus more..  It sucked!  WLS is the only thing that has worked for me long term..

Again!  Welcome!

Thanks! Yes, Lynnda, that "lowest" weight seemed to get higher and higher with each attempt.  Sad

BTW, I just finished viewing all the episodes and loved them. Great work!

Welcome to a very supportive and fun site.  And I "heart" my baby stomach - RNY best thing I ever did (except quit smoking - that was THE best thing I ever did).

Welcome to the BTV forum. I hope you enjoy it here.

Love what your wrote. Let me ask you something....

Was there an AHA moment when you decided to switch from the band to the RNY?

just curious....

Hi Toni,

I think as I progressed through the program at the Obesity Treatment Center and I started to get more information, the possibility of RNY over lapband went from "impossible" to "I'll think about it." Part of it was that my husband had been diagnosed with diabetes in April so I see what he goes through regarding this disease; it is a real eye opener.

Probably the "aha" moment was when I had the appointment with the OTC doctor, a specialist in obesity medicine, at the end of August. He presented a great deal of data and explained each procedure and long term results, as well as drawing a graph showing the weight loss curves for each procedure. (Hey! I'm an engineer by background so it impressed the 'geekness' in me.) One data point really impressed me. He gave the example of a pre-menopausal woman doing two hours of activity and burning 450 calories. He said, all other things being nearly equal, that same woman POST-menopause would burn roughly 1/3 of that amount or 150 calories, due to the metabolic changes she experienced at menopause. Wow. I knew that metabolism goes down at menopause but I never thought it would be that much.

So, given the fact that I am borderline for most potentially serious health conditions and given the fact I am 5-10 years away from menopause, I have a great sense of urgency to take the weight off sooner as opposed to later. The other fact is that I tend to be a sweet, soft food eater, foods that easily "slide" through the band. Just the description of "dumping" sounds so unpleasant that it will act as a strong deterent from overindulging in these types of foods post RNY. Suzette

Thanks Suzette.

That's awesome information.

I work at an engineering firm so I can imaging how important graphs and curves are you to. :-)

I think the information about the post menopausal is fascinating. I'll have  to do more research cause I'm quickly heading that direction.
