Diane (and Rob):

It's also called a chayote. And Rob, I'm really interested in what you did with it!

Wikipedia says it can be eaten raw or cooked and that the whole plant - roots, shoots, and fruit (oh, that rhymes !) are edible.

So, did you like it?  What did you do with it?

yup, chayote squash, sometime called chayote melon. You can't tell from the angle of this photo, but they actually kinda look more like a pear than anything else.

rumor has it that in Australia it is sliced and used as filler in apple pies cause apples are hard to come by there. A urban legend says McDonalds has used them in their apple pies.

They do have a bit of sweetness to them.

First time I took some and cut in sorta small french fries along with some yellow summer squash, tossed them all in a bit of olive oil and seasonings and broiled, for a vege-stix, french fry replacement.  I'd do that again, but peel it next time. The peel is edible, but was still a bit tough.

Another time I shredded some along with some of the squash again, and some carrot and pan "fried" to make a sort of vege-hash browns.

Just bought another... not sure what to do with it yet... maybe  mix with some apple in a dessert type application to cut down on the sugars the apples bring to the party.

or maybe I'll cook some in to my next batch of apple sauce.

I made a buncha chicken yesterday, I may dice a bit up and make some chicken salad for lunch this week. would add a nice lil crunch I think.

g'day

In Australia these vegies are called Choko.
It is true that many people believe that McDonalds use them as filler in thier hot apple pies - I am not convinced.
The reason is more likely that Choko are a very cheap product, that readily takes up the flavour of other ingrediants (ie apple sauce).  Australia has a substantial agricultural industry and there is no shortage of apples - in fact our most southern state (the island of Tasmania) is known as the Apple Isle due to the many orchards.

The humble Choko was once common on the meat and 3 veg dinner plates across the country.  I recall my grand father always had a vine in the back yard and nan would usually peel, boil and serve with butter.  Now, the Choko is rarely seen, as most Australian consumers have a more refined palate.

The attached link is to an Aussie Gardening tv show site with some Choko info and reciepies.

http://www.burkesbackyard.com.au/2001/archives/2001_archives?p=1320

If you are keen, the Choko vine is very easy to grow and will produce a lot of produce.

See ya

Pete

thanks for the insight... I've been buying this on a regular basis... most of the last one got diced up and sauteed with other veges in a batch of quinoa. Still need to see if i can do a apple type dessert application with these I think.
