85lbs gone in this pic

« on: January 25, 2010, 09:50:08 AM »

Hi Gang,

I'm just starting the process of becoming a freak! haha.
I had my first info session on Saturday  and am going to my doc on Wednesday.
My cousin - nature girl- had the surgery and is doing fabulous, I want to look good too!  But more importantly, I want to feel better and not be on the brink of diabetes, get rid of hypertension and also be able to run around with my 11 month old!!

Thanks!  I do have one question for you guys.   I was talking to a lady here where I work about the surgery and she said afterwards she went into a depression for a bit, she thinks she actually mourned food.  I turn to food when I'm happy, when I'm sad, etc.  What new and healthy things am I going to turn to rather than food once I have the surgery and start losing??

Hi there!
Yes, you're friend is correct - many of us get depresed to some extent.

I really felt I was in mourning when it finally hit home what I had done. In addition, in the early days post op, your food is SEVERELY restricted.....

Now you will laugh when I tell you what I turned to.......that thing that filled the gap......

RUNNING  Grin

Yes, I can't really believe it myself. But as the weight dropped, I bought a treadmill and jumped on regularly. The more I walked and then ran, the better I felt  Smiley

Now, 1 1/2 years later, I can eat more and still fight the urges towards emotional eating.

The surgeon will be operating on your tummy it's up to you to work on the stuff between your ears - Thats what my surgeon told me and it's a battle for a lot of post-ops.

Transference is another thing to be aware of - A lot of freaks take up running, cycling and become gym rats as strange as that may sound to you right now.

The one thing I always tell people when they ask about my WLS surgery is that you have to be mentally ready for it.... I know when I first looked into it I wasn't ready. I went away did my research and when I was ready I went ahead full steam.

This is not a quick fix it's a LIFESTYLE change - If you want to win the lottery you have to BUY a ticket right?

Check out the food forum and you will find lots of healthy Bariatric friendly foods to replace all that junk/carb laden crap we stuffed our grills with for all those many years.

I have a little boy (2yrs) who was one of my main driving factors behind my lifestyle change/journey.

Sorry for rambling on Smiley

Kim - Diane and Ian's advice was perfect. I will add one thing - LET yourself mourn and grieve! You can't just let go of something you've depended on all your life without a few crying jags. They made me feel better, so I gave them full reign. I had 2 major ones during the first week, but then once the scale started dropping, it goes away fast! Plus, you'll find so many lovely options farther along the road to take the place of the bad choices you've made all your life. We're here for you!

Kim, it's good to have you here.  I, too, mourned (sometimes still a little nostalgia) the old eating and it can be a battle when stress is high or it's the happy, happy holidays... but the change for me has been worth it.  Blood pressure is down, and liver functions are normal (I had fatty liver hepatitis plus tumors), the sore on my leg that wouldn't heal is now healed nicely, and I can walk across the floor without getting winded.  I can even walk much farther without getting out of breath or having to sit down and I can take the stairs!

It sounds like you have some great motivation for your own health and to be there for your little one.  So, you'll probably mourn, but down the road there is still a lot of great eating even post WLS.  Of course, I have also heard of some people who end up not even being interested in eating at all after surgery, who just breeze right through post-op life.

I look forward to seeing you around.   Cheesy

Welcome to the group Kim and congratulations on making the best decision for your new healthy life!

I replaced eating with cleaning the house. Everytime I'm tempted to eat i go throw a load of clothes in the washer or wipe down a counter or something to make my life better. It's a concious decision daily.

Bunches of luck to you!

Good to have you here!  This is an ongoing process and few have it all figured out but we do pretty well Cheesy  As to the mourning-I really didn't experience this much though it sort of annoyed me that even when I put only a teeny bit of food on my plate I still couldn't finish it all.  You'll do great!
