I can not stand sugar substitutes! I tried them all. Most make me sick to my stomach. I was wondering what suggestions you all might have for me to do. I am on my pre op 4 day liquid diet. I have surgery Tuesday 3/2/10. I start protein supplements 2 days after surgery. I have tried like 6 ones. Including muscle milk, jillian micheals and I can't think of the others. They were all nasty! I don't know what to do. I plan to try unflavored unjury but, I haven't found it in stores.

Don't give up! And remember - your tastes will change drastically after surgery. So what may taste nasty now, you may really be able to enjoy post-surgery.
For a long time after my surgery, I could not tolerate vanilla protein powder. Couldn't take the smell even! I started baking with it, and then - someone told me about mixing it with a tablespoon of dry SF Jello pudding powder. I did the lemon and the pistachio - and it was great! Now, I love me some vanilla powder!
Just keep experimenting, and you'll find one you can at least tolerate - and then you may grow to love it!

I would mix my unflavored Unjury with the Tourani syrups (SF - cause I had RNY). That helps with the flavor. Toni also has a recipe that she liked - check around the board for that.

Things for me tasted so sweet after surgery......
As T2 mentions your taste buds change dramatically - It's just a process of elimination finding the shakes you like.
Buy some Isopure RTD's as they are great immediately after surgery - You can get them at GNC and the Vitamin Shoppe
We'll be getting you spot on the losers bench ready for you!!

I can NOT STAND the myriad of Vanilla and Chocolate protein shakes out there. Even doctored up it was hard for me to get through one.
I relied on Nectar protein shakes...these came in fruit flavors. And weren't thick.. I hated the thickness of some of those shakes. Nectar got me through the liquid phases and the times when I just wasn't able to eat enough to get all I need.
Now...those are WAY TOO SWEET (someone suggested adding lemon juice to these to help cut the sweet but I haven't tried that). I am able to get most of my protein from food but do have a ProJo or other prepared coffee type protein drink for the added protein most day. These are really the only ones I like now. They are pricey...but looking at it they really are the same price (Projo is cheaper) than the daily Starbucks run I did pre-op.
I do think I need to go back and try some brands again. I keep hearing about Click but I have not tried their flavors.
You have to muscle through this... I remember this being hard too until I found SOMETHING I liked.

Hi twinels! We are practically neighbors, I live up in the Lehigh Valley.
As for your problem, I am amazed at the amount of bariatric products that are out there. Have you tried a big variety of them? I went to each website and asked for samples, every company was very generous and sent some. I'm sure everyone is right about your tastes changing after surgery too.
Good luck!!

Thanks for all the advice. I will keep trying. I hadn't thought of asking for samples. I will try that.

I believe unjury can only be purchased on line.
Keep trying. You'll find one. It just takes a lot of sampling. Everyone's tastes are different and like others have said...your tastes will change after surgery.
Keep plugging away. You'll find something. Remember...some times you may have to "mix and match" products to come up with something.
As far as the artificial sweetners....often times people just use too much. try starting with just half of the suggested size. Just a hint of sweetness may be all you require.

all great advice. I can add one or two things. I like the necter ones with a splash of lemon juice or unsweetened (not light) cranberry juice added. Most and of the sweet ones can be "improved" with instant expresso powder - it kills the whey flavor. If you are using milk try soy milk I like the unsweetened that way you get less of the sweetener. Also add more of the liquid to you shakes to cut the taste some. Next try brewing some tea (regular or herbal) cool it and add protein to it.
Lastly many of them are much better with ice in them both for the coldness and if you fill your shaker up with water as the ice melts you sneak in alot of extra water.
Good luck and keep trying new things.

I have some great suggestions. I really don't like the vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate shakes out there. I've tried several so far and I have found that I LOVE these - check out this site for some ideas. http://mydietshopz.com/grteaandcrbd.htmlIt's a liquid that you put in your bottled water. 15 grams of protien, but should not be your only source of protein supplements! And there are several flavors. http://mydietshopz.com/wibespdrmixb.htmlYummy blended with frozen cherries. http://mydietshopz.com/piordrmixbby.htmlI blend this one with a few cubes of frozen pineapple and it taste like an Orange Julius (if anyone else knows what that is!) http://mydietshopz.com/vapaclcoremo.htmlSUPER Yummy hot cocoa - doesn't taste like a protein at all. This is a variety pack, but my favorite was the Amaretto and the regular. I add a little cinnamon to mine or maybe a little vanilla. Super good! Hope that helps! Shan
