There are times in my plan when I’d like to add some protein to dishes, but vanilla, chocolate, or fruit flavors just won’t cut it. So at Rob’s and Cyndy’s suggestion, I wanted to try True Protein. Rob said the unflavored, unsweetened version was really great, with no protein after-taste or smell. I think the True Protein site ( www.trueprotein.com) is cool for several reasons. Cyndy likes it because she can create her own personal protein concoction, with different flavors and sweeteners. That’s a bit overwhelming for me, because they have SO MUCH to offer! A ton of different types of protein, which I would have to research before I even knew what to choose. But for those WLS patients who are sensitive to soy or milk proteins, this is fantastic! You can even get pea protein! How cool is that? Again, not sure what all of the benefits are from the different types, but if you’re in need of finding something different to suit your body’s needs, this is the place. I also like the price! They sell their protein by the pound, and I got the unflavored, unsweetened (whey protein isolate) for just $10.49 per pound! Naturally, the more you add to it, the price goes up, but for your own personal creation, that’s a good deal. They will ship it in a free food grade bag (which I got, but better have an extra scoop available at home), or they’ll ship it in a jug with a scoop for an extra 75 cents per pound. Shipping was very reasonable as well. Don’t care for Splenda or Aspartame as a sweetener? They have all natural Stevia! Wanna add some electrolytes or more vitamins and minerals to your mix? Go ahead! And they have flavors I’ve never even seen at other protein companies, from kiwi to concord grape! I love steel cut oatmeal for breakfast. It holds me so well until lunchtime, but there’s not a lot of protein involved, even when you add PB2 or peanut butter. I’ve added a scoop of BSN Lean Dessert Fresh Cinnamon Roll protein powder, and it was good, but I’m a bit of an oatmeal purist, so I don’t always want the cinnamon flavor. Today’s breakfast for me – steel cut oatmeal with 1 T of real butter, 1 T of Whey Low Gold, and 1 scoop of unflavored, unsweetened True Protein. I got 27g of protein in my breakfast, and it was awesome! No protein flavor at all, just a nice creaminess to my oatmeal. And that same pure flavor that I love in the mornings. Now I can make all of my carby breakfasts with no guilt – pancakes! Thanks to Rob and Cyndy for promoting this site and giving me advice on it. You guys should really check this out!

Yep. Love this site. I might also add that the forums are awesome, too. Unsure of what to order? Just ask someone will gladly help you build your own mix. I have been too chicken to try the unflavored version, Tammy, but now, I think I will. I will say that I, for one, do not like the food grade bag shipments. It is too messy for my taste, but others save containers and just transfer their new shipment into their old tub.

Cyndy - had I thought of that, I would have saved one of my Max Protein tubs, but I had thrown mine away just the week before I got mine! The bag isn't bad - I just keep it clipped up on my counter with the scoop inside. I haven't been to their forums yet, but I will mosey over and take a look.
I forgot to add that I put my scoop this morning in hot oatmeal - no clumping! I'd be careful doing this when adding to hot soups, etc., but I was really pleased that it didn't react to heat. I'll just be throwing scoops of this stuff into everything!

I order 3-4# at a time and keep it in a my own large container.
You can get the unflavored and now order the flavorings separately. I just got the cookie dough one and it's pretty good... just need to be careful about adding too much.

Thank you, sweet Kiersti!
Rob - wait a minute. I can order the unflavored powder, and then order whatever sweetener I want to go in it? Really? I have to go check this out!

Have any of you tried the flavor packs? How do they come packaged? How many pounds of the PP do you usually go through in a month? Thanks for any replies

I think Rob has had some of the flavored stuff, but I'm addicted to the unflavored. There are so many more things I can do with it! However, I have lots of protein powders, so my 3 lbs that I bought about 3 months ago is still with me - well, I have about 1/2 pound left. Depends on how many drinks you drink.

Hi Jennifer,
I last bought their premium flavour sample pack - each sample has 50g (45g protein) and I usually split that into 2 - so one pack per day. It is $31 for all the flavours and works out to about $1 a day. I really enjoyed it that way. I would stick my hand in the bag and drink whatever flavour came out. Most of them are really good. Even the ones I was a little leery about trying usually tasted good. There is also a natural flavour sample pack - 12 different ones, I think. I didn't like the natural flavours as much as the premium flavours.
I just placed my next order and did the sample pack again. I also ordered a few pounds of "DC's mix" which is just an isolate. They now have protein soups. They are a bit pricey, but I'm going to try them too.
I totally wanted to buy some unflavoured, but promptly forgot! I guess that will be my next order.

Kristi - I'm so glad you posted this, because would you believe that as big a fan as I am of True Protein - I had NO IDEA there was a sample pack?? I am all about the sample packs! That will definitely be my next purchase!!

I ordered the unflavored unsweetened True protein. I also bought the flavor powders. Choc. vanilla and strawberry. It only takes 1/8th of tsp per drink to flavor so the flavor powders will last forever. I'm curious what you all use to mix in. Milk ,water juice? So far the only thing I can stand is milk. Really good with yogurt and frozen fruit. I tried soup and juice but couldn't handle it. Even unflavored you can still smell and taste the protein *blek* Coconut extract was good too with some crushed ice. Please I need more ideas to use.

Jen, I use a milk / water combo to help cut the carbs from the milk. I'm also fortunate enough to have Hood's Calorie Countdown milk sold in my Kroger, which is also low carb.
If you haven't visited Eggface yet for her protein drink ideas, please do. She has so many wonderful recipes, as does Bariatric Eating and Linda Farnsworth's blog. I've tried just about every one of those recipes, and almost all of them have worked for me.
Remember to add a bit more Splenda to the unflavored to give sweetness. After that, you can mix it with just about anything. I have not used it in soup, but I do love it in oatmeal for breakfast. Again, add some Splenda or Whey Low Gold when mixing.

most of my shakes are soy milk and frozen fruit.. sometimes with a bit of splenda. I also do chocolate malts using cocoa powder, splenda and malted milk powder.
bought some cherries last week, pitted and froze them, one of my faves is chocolate-cherry. Most fruit ones I'll also add a few chunks of frozen banana to give a bit more thickness to them.
the strawberry-watermelon is usually fine like it is (no milk), sometimes just a bit of water if both fruits are frozen. The powder gives it a sort of creamsicle like quality.
I also do 1/2 a scoop (two tbsp) every day in my morning oatmeal (1/2 cup oats, 2tbsp ground flax seed, some fresh or dried fruit and 1 cup water, nuke for 2.5 minutes - or if you saw my vegas appearances, use your coffee pot! ;> ). I've found if I do more than that it gets clumpy.

For me, I just drink my protein straight up with water. I don't do a lot of shakes. I never had a problem with a protein taste or smell.
My last order was premium dutch chocolate. It is very good. I will have a scoop of that and a scoop of the plain in 22oz of water, shake it up and drink. The premium flavours are strong enough that I usually dilute them quite a bit. So by adding the plain protein powder I am still getting enough protein.
With my last order I bought the natural chocolate. I didn't like it very much. I could never drink it straight. I would use it to make a warm chocolate milk mixed with milk, protein, and sf chocolate syrup.
Remember - as a post op, you might find everything completely different. Our pouches have a mind and will all to their own.

Rob, Is the malted milk powder sugar-free? I've been looking for some in my area and can't find it. I wanted to use it to thicken a mocha-cappuccino shake recipe I've been working on.

mocha-cappuccino shake please keep working on it and let us know. I just got my true protein plain and I added everything to it. Do most of you get it plain with no vitamins or anything with it?

Linda - I get my True Protein plain because it's truly the best unflavored I've ever had. No smell or aftertaste at all. However, I do like some flavor at times, so you might want to plan to get to some chocolate or vanilla eventually - or whatever flavors you like.
