I'm 47, 250 and looking at kickboxing. I'd rather ride a bike all day but it won't do anything for my arms.

So... has anyone ever taken it up?

Is it fun?

I don't know about bikes, they are expensive these days!

I always did active stuff when I was obese. Not kickboxing, but biking, figure skating, lifting weights at the gym, dancing, etc. I think it's all doable as long as you accept you may not be as good as it as you would if you weighed less.

P.S. Bikes do a lot for your core and they do *some* for your arms because you need to hold yourself up on them. Well, you do if you don't get a recumbent!  Tongue

Heh, well you can do other stuff for your arms.

I think it's important to do what you enjoy so you keep it up and not worry so much about maximizing calorie burn and the like. Plus, you can always do both!

I have done kisckboxing classes and LOVED them.  It is fricking HARD work, but you see major results.  Just make sure to get a class/instructor that will push you but not too much.  There were a couple of things I had to modify because of my weight.

Nope, haven't don't kickboxing.

But if y ou don't have any medical issues/pain I don't see any reason why an obese person couldn't join in.  I agree with MacMadame that it will be harder for an obese person, but it's not about how it looks or even going the same speed as the class.  It's about you!  You being active and having fun and getting  your heartrate up!

Go out and kick butt!

You can get a core workout on a regular bike.
The drill is to try and hold yourself in your riding position without using the arms for support.
You start off using a lot of arm, everyone does, then you work on tightening the stomach muscles as you lean forward
to the handlebars, gradually taking more and more of the support role onto the abdomen instead of the arms.

While waiting to decide or find out if you can get into kickboxing, you can use that recumbent bike and go to Wal-Mart and get some exercise bands for around $12.00.   Your arms are not doing anything while on those so combine two types of exercise at one time.   

Kickboxing sounds like so much more fun though. I hope it works out for you Smiley
