Why am I a freak:

I'm tired of the harpoon marks I get in the pool or the little child in an elevator telling mommy, "Look mommy, he's fat".  I have to be around for my Grand Daughter as she will be the only one I'll ever have.  I'm tired of mowing the lawn and not being about to finish without a rest.  I live on a farm and have lots of fence to fix, it not easy anymore to bend over and pound staples into the posts.  One of our dear friends at our winter place took me off to the side and told me he wanted me to do something about my weight that he was very concerned.  That really hit me hard and thats when I made the decision.  Yes, I'm a freak and I want to be a sugerlly Altered Freak.

Can't wait until spring. I have 20 off now sense the first of July and after spending the winter in southern California, biking and swimming and walking around the park, I'm looking forward to another 40lbs off.

I started my journey at 420 so I have quit a way to go, but one of joy as I look at all the success in these photo's.  What a transformation and joy you all must feel.  Each of you should be proud of yourself.

If this doesn't give me the will to press on, nothing will.  I'm so amazed and I want some of that!    Grin

-What type of surgery did you have? - Lap Gastric Bypass

-What was the date of your surgery? - March 12, 2009 is my RE-birthday!

-Total weight loss? - As of today, I've lost 141lbs TOTAL.  I've lost 116.4lbs since surgery.

-Why are you a freak? - Well, I was a FREAK before surgery!  But now I'm just a "smaller" freak (ask anyone that knows me!).  Friends & Family have told me, that since I've had surgery, I've inspired them to change their lifestyles as well, and eat healthier!  That is an amazing feeling!

Last year, my Step-Dad passed away.  Before he passed, one of the last conversations he had with me, he said that he would do ANYTHING to help me get the surgery.  He knew how badly I wanted it, and he knew what positive changes it would make in my life.  I recently have come to the realization that if my Step-Dad had not passed away, I would not have been able to afford to get RNY.  The end of his life..... Saved mine.  So in honor of his memory, I will live like he did!

He taught me to stop and smell the roses, enjoy every minute of life, & never take anything for granted.  Live life to the fullest!  So, this is not just a "New Chapter" in my life, this is the "Volume 2".  And on the first page of my Volume 2, you will see the words: “This book is dedicated to Dan, my stepfather.  If it weren’t for him, this book would not be possible.  Thank you, Dan.  See you on the other side.”

Thanks guys!  You rock!

Christine Tosti's entry for freak of the week:

What type of surgery did you have?
RNY - proximal

What was the date of your surgery?
Oct. 29th, 2002

Total weight loss?
97 lbs. (Highest weight 269) (Lowest weight 155) (Current weight 173) (Goal 165)

Why are you a freak?
Oct. 29th marks my 7 year anniversary and I am still freaking on! (I thought it was 6 until I did the math–wasn’t there a dumb episode?) Though the road has not been perfect and at times I have gotten off track, I am so grateful for my tool and would do it all over again! For me surgery was not about only weight loss, but it’s truly about changing your mind, body and spirit! Knowing this is ONLY a TOOL, the work must come from within. The person I was 7 years ago is no where near who I am today! For me this is about the journey not the weight loss. Obesity is a life long struggle and the key for me is always being honest with my self, knowing when to reach out for help and in return helping others along with way. WLS patients have amazing support for each other—so where ever you are in your journey, keep on freaking!

The day of surgery and 4 months post op:

Now:

Saving the World, One Pound at a Time

Okay, I'm officially throwing my hat in the FREAK RING.

I had laparoscopic RNY in December of 2007. Since June of 2007, I have lost 170 pounds. At one point, I was down 180 pounds, but I was FREAKISHLY thin and regained just enough to look and feel fabulous. I have a really fun blog called
GastricBypassBarbie.com, which I started about 2-1/2 months ago because I love to talk about my bariatric AFTER LIFE. Well...actually I just love to talk, but the fact that I get to discuss stuff I'm inordinately passionate about doesn't hurt.

I am NOT your ordinary post-op, because I had three strictures and a gall bladder mishap in my first year The weird result was, I'm now mostly vegetarian, except for occasional fish. Anyone who knew me in my BEFORE life will tell you that this fact is, in and of itself FREAKY, because I always hated vegetables and fish. Oh yeah, and I can eat really hot salsa now (not bad for a flaca gringa -- skinny white girl).

I'd love to be your next FREAK OF THE WEEK for lots of really good reasons:

  • I call myself Gastric Bypass Barbie (isn't that freaky enough?)
  • I don't miss bread (not even a little bit).
  • I embrace my shrinkles.
  • I add cucumbers, chili powder, fresh spinach leaves and pistachio jello to my protein shakes (not all at the same time).
  • I didn't complain about losing hair (or getting crow's feet around my eyes!)
  • I don't think weight loss surgery is for everyone (although I wish it were.)
  • I formed a team for the Walk From Obesity and Named it THE BIG FAT LOSERS.
  • I attend weekly support group meetings (which I fondly call "FAT CLUB") <--- are you sensing a trend?
  • I take my JCPenney Handy Blender everywhere I go (which includes my motor home).
  • I actually LIKE exercising (and don't even mind sweating anymore!)
  • I have been run over by a car on my bike and lived to tell about it. (Ironically, if I hadn't been so healthy after losing 170 pounds, I probably wouldn't have been riding a bike in the first place, but I digress...)
  • I have flown the Goodyear Blimp. (Not just flown IN it, but actually FLOWN it.) <-- please, if that doesn't win the nomination, nothing will.

Here are my pictures:

BEFORE (Mother Jugs and Glory @ 316 Pounds)

AFTER[/color] (Gastric Bypass Barbie @ 150 Pounds)

Yea for me!!!  Cheesy

I must be honest and tell you that I am not the originator of the word "Shrinkles" -- but I do appreciate all of the wonderful praise I'm getting for using it (ha ha). I believe I first saw the word in use over on BE about 1-1/2 years ago. I quickly appropriated it and made it my own!!! Use away, girls!

Hey everyone!  It's Jenna. Smiley  (aka tylarea on youtube)

-What type of surgery did you have?
Laproscopic RNY Gastric Bypass

-What was the date of your surgery?
July 21, 2009

-Total weight loss?
82ish pounds so far (5 months) - only another 75 to hit my surgeons goal!

-Why are you a freak?
I'm a freak because I'm freaking awesome! Smiley I spent way too long being uncomfortable with myself and have finally started to break out of that shell and truly appreciate myself!  I used to think of myself as just the 'funny fat friend' but now am starting to see what my friends have always seen - the 'fantastically fabulous friend'.  Having gastric bypass was the BEST decision in my life, because I'm finally able to *live* life.

I had LapRny January 13, 2009.  I weighed in at a whopping 295 pounds on December 30, 2008, but that wasn't my highest weight. At one time I had gotten up to 325 pounds. Since August I've maintained a weight loss of 115 pounds and am holding strong at 180 which seems to work on my 5'7" frame. I have become a bicycle riding "Freak." I never knew I could enjoy exercise so much. I ride 4 mornings a week for about 12 miles each day. What a rush to feel the wind in my face. It makes me feel like a kid again and at 57 years old...that's a great feeling to have!

I had RNY on January 15, 2009.  Today is my 1 year re-birthday.  I have lost 130 lbs.  I'm a freak because I've made it!  I took a big step to come out on the other side.  While I don't always see myself as a success, I am.  Putting myself up for freak of the week is a step I'm taking towards accepting my changes.  I've ran a 5K!  I could have never done that before surgery.

Before:  My boys and I at Disneyworld.

After:  My best friend and I at the start of my 5K race.

I am a brand new FREAK and SOOOO proud to be one.

I live in Springfield, Va and my Lap-Band surgery was on Feb. 9, 2010 right in the middle of Washington D.C.'s "Snowmageddon".  I survived it even with a few power outages at the hospital.  Most importantly my little pouch is in place!

I am a mom of a two year old and a one year old who is madly in love with her hubby.  The kids alone should be reason enough to be the Freak of the Week, but in the two weeks prior to my surgery (while on a liquid diet) and two weeks since my surgery, I've lost a total of a whopping 28 lbs!  I'm THRILLED!  I've learned so much about my body and my spirit in the past month.  My goal weight is about 165 and I know I can do it now!

Take a look at my photos to see the difference a month has made in my face alone!

I adore you guys and look forward to watching each episode.  Thank you so much for being such a great inspiration for all of us WLS Freaks.

Cheers,
Shan
