Hello all, just wanted to introduce myself and not feel like a peeper on the boards.  I am set for VSG surgery on September 14, 2010 and can say after reading several posts on this board that I am very excited to get my new tool and get on with my life.  I can't wait to be energetic and to have my body keep up with my busy mind.  I look forward to reading more about what to expect and suggestions of proteins to use.

Thanks for reading

Thank you...now for the question....4 days out of surgery how bad did you feel.  I am asking because my daughter has a band competition (1st one of the year) and I don't know if I will be able to go....it will break my heart to not go.

I would think that you could go after 4 days. I have known several peeps who go shopping, etc that soon.

Mmm....Your hospital stay is usually a day or two after surgery.

After that, you are pretty much on rest.

If you could set up the situation where you won't climb stairs, do heavy lifting, sitting comfortably and have the ability to go lay down if you need too, and basically,  don't get too worked up...then you might be able to go.

Keep in mind...you will just have had MAJOR surgery.

I still felt bad, but went to the hospital to wait while my DH had his surgery the third day after mine.  I got up and walked the halls to help with the pain on doctor's orders and it was tiring, but I would not have missed it.

Welcome Kat.

For me, I was very tired, but I did go shopping on day 4.  There's not a lot of energy for anything extra, but going and sitting in a chair would have been fine for me.  But, remember, everyone reacts differently to surgery.  I had had 3 c-sections, so I kind of had an idea that I would be ok.  This also takes into consideration that there will be no major complications!  Like Toni said, this IS major surgery.

It really depends on the person.  I had my surgery in Puerto Vallarta Mexico on a Tuesday.  I was in the hospital til Thursday (they kept me longer than they would have in the states - usually it's overnight in the U.S.); On friday evening, I was in downtown Puerto Vallarta with another woman who'd had surgery and our friends, and we were singing karaoke and sipping chicken broth.

It just depends on the person - but if you take it EASY and remember to rest (and have LIQUID with you at the concert to sip), you should be okay, as long as the surgery has no complications.

OK, Band Parent of 14 yrs here, recently my son completed UGA Redcoats. Here it is. I KNOW exactly how you feel, but!!!! part of the new you is making wise decisions for yourself. This doesn't sound like a winner. You can send her a video before the performance and she can send you great video of the performance.

Throw off the "chains of band parentage," which i know you love!! and take the time you need for yourself.

Welcome! I'm a newbie, too. My surgery is on Monday, and I've been wondering about the recovery time a lot. At this point, I just hope everything goes okay, and plan on doing what I need to do to get healthy, even if I have to miss out on some stuff. Bigmanwalking has the right idea about the video-- even if you feel up to it on the day, you may not be able to stay till the end.

Where will you be having your surgery? Are there cultural differences, in the surgery concept or medical technology/ treatment of obesity, between SK and US?

I had surgery on a Wed., got home on Thurs. and my son's 17th birthday party was that Sat. -- so 4 days later. I managed to last about an hour but all I did was sit there like a zombie.

Um... yeah... but even though Koreans are hyper-conscious of looks and being thin, Asians begin having co-morbidities at a lower BMI, so 30 is the benchmark. The doctor used the non-Asian standard for me, though. Obesity is new here. I've been here 12 years, and I've seen it explode. Surgery is still new here, though. My surgeon is actually a cancer specialist, because stomach cancer is the most prevalent in SK. So, he's been doing this surgery for about 20 years, just not for weight loss. I think it will become huge here, if only for cosmetic purposes. Even kids get their eyes done here, and lots of teens get their noses built up and jaws "shaved" (bone, not skin). I'll save my rant about that for another time...

I'm doing great! I had a rocky first few days, but since then, I've been out and about, going about my regular life. Of course, I'm on summer holidays right now, and my "regular life" isn't that physically strenuous. :-)
