I am having problems liking protein shakes. While I am waiting for my approval from the insurance company I have been trying different protein shakes. When I drink them my stomach gets upset. I even got the lactose-free ones to see if that is the problem but my stomach still gets upset. Generally I am not a shake kind of person. I have to do two weeks of protein shakes before my surgery. What can I do to get my protein before and after my surgery? I have learned so much from everybody in this site.

My nut gave me a list of shakes. I have been getting the already made ones ( Oh yea, Pure protein,Muscle Milk) . I have samples of powder mix coming in the mail. I am hoping that I will do better with the powder and mixing it with water.

Experiment is the key imho
Use SF Syrups/Fruit/Extracts/Ice/Decaf Coffee to enhance the shake
I hardly ever use water as it tastes like crap even with my fave shake - I mix mine with Plain Soy Milk
Try some of the RTD's too like Isopure and Protein Blitz
Tip: Even though it may say use 8oz of water/liquid I often use just 4oz if I don't feel like drinking that much
As your taste buds will change make sure you don't go overboard buying stuff before you get sliced and diced

I like the Jay Robb unflavored. When I make anything that has multiple ingredients, like a casserole or mac and cheese, I put some in.

What is it about the shakes in particular that you don't like? I think ISOPURE is good if you prefer a more fruity thin drink, although I had to add splenda. I also love the Isopure Dutch Chocolate Low Carb and the Strawberry Cream mixed with light almond milk (it's very light and not thick at all) but I also like the thick shakes like the BSN Lean Desserts in Chocolate Fudge, Cinnamon Bun, and especially Banana Nut Bread flavor. Muscle Milk has a weird aftertaste, but I'll drink it in a pinch. The EAS Low Carb Advantage ready to drinks are thin, but taste better than Muscle Milk - the dark chocolate is my favorite. I didn't care too much for the Myoplex ones.

I have a pretty extensive list of protein shake recipes. It's a 39 page pdf file. If you send me a message with your email address I can send it to you. I haven't tried all of them, but the ones I have tried have been good.
Also some of them won't be early patient friendly, you will have to use some caution/common sense when you chose which ones you want to make. Here are a few examples of some of the recipes. These will vary on nutrition data depending on which protein powder you use.
Apple Pie Frosty 1 1/2 scoops HDT 5+1 vanilla protein powder 1 apple, peeled, cored, and sliced (or 1/2 C no-sugar-added applesauce) 2 packets Splenda 1/2 t cinnamon 1/4 t nutmeg 3/4 C water 8-10 ice cubes Blend thoroughly and drink up

All great suggestions here.
Here's a little secret. Figure out what flavor you really like and then take what is out there...and make your own.
Things you can add to protien drinks.
Sugar free Torani syrups (or even get SF Vanilla from starbucks) Sugar Free Drinks like crystal light, SF Kool Aide, Propel Juices - use sparingly cause they are higher in sugar but still strong enough to mask the protieny taste Fruit - Blending some strawberries, blue berries, bananas can go a long way to mask protien flavors. SF Puddings and Jellos - These can also go a long way in masking and thickening up your shakes if you like that. Sweetners and spices like splenda, cinnamon, nutmeg.
My favorite all time is simple
SF orange sunlight crystal light a few dashes of SF vanilla syrup a sooop of unflavored protien and ice, mix and drink
Another Example: I loved Jamba Juice before surgery...Love em. Do you know how many calories are in a jamba juice, let alone sugars.
Anyway, i would take a vanilla flavored protien, two strawberries, a quarter of a banana, some orange sunrise crystal light, some SF vanilla yogurt and blend it. Taste like an Orange A peel from Jumba juice. The real key is to experiement with flavors.

I've found that you can completely de-fizz pop if you put some in a blender bottle and shake.

I am at the same place you are. I am trying a lot of protein products but have a different question. After surgery is a protein drink or shake a part of your fluid/protein intake or is it a meal replacement. And if it is a meal replacement do I look for protein with certain nutritional stats. Or am I way over thinking this protein thing.

1. It counts towards your fluid intake although I don't personally count it now - I did as a baby-freak when I was using Isopure RTD's 2. I treat it as fuel/meal/snack Make sure your protein powder or drink states that it is pre-digested or hydrolized. And the best kind of protein would be a whey blend protein. Second best would be a 100% whey protein. Ian

I am also waiting for insurance approval. Just met the Dr. last Thursday. I had to loose 5% for my insurance company before I met the doctor. I use the Premier Protien shakes from Costco and have had no problem with them. Have you tried those?

I try all the protein drinks I can get my hands on don't know how to get samples would love that. I use the one at WAL MART body Fortress WhEY protein vanilla, I use cold water splenda hazlenut flavoring 1/2 tsp coffee vanilla flavoring shake and put in crushed ice the drink is very light and good the crushed ice helps me to drink and chew at the same time I have it every am like a ice coffe drink. FOr me using water instead of milk really helps me to be able to driink it much easier, and I love milk so go figure. ftp:// HOPE This helps
