Former Cowboys star Nate Newton has lost 175 pounds
By Chris Chase

At his heaviest, Nate Newton weighed 401 pounds. He was so big during his playing days that he forced the Dallas Cowboys equipment manager to rearrange his entire ordering system (and earned the nickname "The Kitchen" because of it). He used to joke about his size, saying that when he retired from the NFL he was going to get into the weight-gaining business because "I know all the wrong things to do."

He stayed big after retiring and through his 32-month stint in prison and it eventually got to the point where Newton, 48, stopped joking about his size and became fearful of it instead. When he came to the realization that his obesity might not let him live long enough to see his youngest son graduate from high school, he decided to do something about.

The Dallas Morning news reports that in February, Newton underwent a new surgery called "vertical gastrectomy," an operation which removes up to 75 percent of the patient's stomach and staples the remaining portion. Today, he weighs 220 pounds. It's the thinnest he's been since eighth grade.

The vertical gastrectomy operation is usually reserved for people who are too heavy to undergo other forms of weight-loss surgery. At this point, it's an uncommon procedure because few doctors perform it and most insurance companies regard it as experimental. Newton's doctor insists it's safe, but the extreme weight loss the former NFL star has experienced isn't normal.

Newton has resumed working out and is training like he did in the old days, sometimes going for as long as two hours per day. He eventually hopes to get down to 196 pounds, which would be 200 less than when he started.

Even at 220, he looks like a new man. Deion Sanders, who recently had coffee with Newton, said he could hardly believe his eyes when he saw his old teammate.

"I'm happy for him because I know I'm going to have him for another 70, 80 years," Sanders said. (That's an optimistic life expectancy expectation from Deion; in 80 years, Newton would be 128 years old.)

Newton says there is one downside to his svelte, new frame though.

"I don't get discounts anymore because nobody recognizes me until they see my credit card," he told the Dallas Morning News.

It's a small price to pay for a big lifestyle change.

We see him on commercials for Dr. Kim.  He really praises his dr in interviews, etc. and has done really well.

There was a recent post about a football player (playing currently) who got the lap band.  I know during the training season, he was having some hydration issues.  They have a trainer to monitor him at all times to see how it goes.

I think it's great that famous folks can help spread the news about WLS and obesity.

YAY! Another positive story for the sleeve. And wow - 175 pounds - that proves it works as well as RNY when you work the tool - very good information!

Here is the NFL player I was talking about.

Eagles lineman Max Jean-Gilles loses weight the hard way

By Doug Farrar

For some, lap-band surgery and other weight-loss methods are elective in nature. But for others, health concerns present themselves more immediately. So it has been for Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman Max Jean-Gilles(notes), who had maxed out at 400 pounds.

"I know I had to lose the weight to stay on the field," Jean-Gilles told AOL Fanhouse. "And I sure didn't want to be 400 pounds -- or more -- after football and then have heart problems and all kinds of health problems. I was close to 400 pounds -- like 398 -- and I thought there was no way I could live like this. I was breathing heavy."

New York Jets coach Rex Ryan recently underwent lap-band surgery, in which the stomach's capacity is reduced by a band, making it impossible for the person who has undergone the procedure to over-eat. But it's believed that Jean-Gilles is the first NFL player to undergo the procedure.

"It's was all my wife's idea actually," Jean-Gilles said. "I thank her for that. She talked about it to (the team). Something that would give me quick results and something that could get me back on the field ASAP. It was all her idea."

The Eagles organization was aware of the surgery, concerned about the effects it might have on Jean-Gilles, and they've made sure that trainer Rick Burkholder is observing Jean-Gilles' progress through the toughest parts of camp.

On one occasion, his inability to take in enough fluids affected his health. "I was sweating real bad," he said, after collapsing on the field (pictured below). "I kept throwing up. I couldn't hold anything in. I can't really pump in liquids like I want to because my stomach is a little shrunk. So when I drink a little quicker it comes back up. I have to learn how to deal with that."

That's the scary side. On the positive side, Jean-Gilles is down to 345 pounds, and said that his energy has definitely increased. "For the most part, I feel great. I'm bouncing around everywhere I go. Running on the field. I'm the first one out there."

Of course, there's the aspect of missing all the food he ate before, but it's worth it for Jean-Gilles to stay the course. For his health, his football career, and for his life.

"I'm just playing football, man," he said in the Fanhouse piece. "I'm not worried about the weight. I got that monkey off my back."

This may be the very first article I've seen that labelled WLS as the "hard way" instead of the "easy way!"

Both fantastic articles - so glad well know people are being open about this to help others and get rid of the stigma that some want to place on WLS.

Thanks for sharing these articles. So interesting that the players are being open and honest about having the surgery. I am glad they are sharing their stories with the world.

LOL, Marie! Yes, that line is total crap, and obviously, education on VSG has a long way to go. But it's a start!
