Hi, I am a gastric sleeve revision patient (original sleeve was in 1/2009).  I just had surgery on 8/3/11.  All my doctor's office told me is to take a multi-vitamin twice a day and B-12 once a day - but no mention of how much of any particular vitamin.  A few months prior to surgery, my blood levels came back that I was low in Vit D and anemic so my doctor told me to take iron and Vit D.  I've reviewed all the options available from Celebrate and even really enjoyed the free samples!  But I'm confused over what I should take and how much?  Just a good multi?  Calcium plus 500?  Can Celebrate advise me?  I'm thinking I need a multi, the calcium, and iron.  I just don't want to take too much of something.

Thanks,
Monica

The ASMBS guide doesn't directly address the sleeve. Some people say to just do the Band recommendations but my program recommends more.

The basic vitamins are:

2x adult dose of a good multi-vitamin (ASMBS recommendations for what make a multi "good" are excellent
1500 mg of calcium citrate, taken in 500 mg doses (so 3 times a day) and at least 2 hours out from any iron (or a multi with iron) you may take

Then, if you are deficient in anything, you take something for that too. The most common things to be deficient in are:

Vitamin D - even non-freaks are low in this one!
Iron - use carbonyl or heme iron - with a low acid environment in our sleeves, the other kinds aren't as well absorbed
B12 - sleevesters shouldn't need sublingual, any B12 should do

I take Vitamin D but I don't need the extra iron or B12. I do take iron though but only because I use a multi-vitamin that doesn't have iron. (That's on purpose so I can take my multi with my calcium.) I started out with Centrum, which is an excellent multi, but then I switched to Celebrate capsules because they don't have iron and they do have calcium citrate so now I can buy less calcium and have more flexibility with my supplement schedule.

Toni - Miss you too.  That Mike is a lucky guy!

Great points MacMadame - keep in mind that the sleeve is still a very new procedure and while we are seeing some great results, the long term nutritional issues have still to be determined.  Our dietary team tends to err on the side of caution for this surgery and would prefer to see patients follow a supplementation schedule that more reflects a gastric bypass.  Thanks for your support.
