I have an issue with my feet that seems to be getting worse rather than better.  I'm HOPING that as I lose weight it will improve a lot because I'm not carrying around so much weight.  After nearly any amount of walking, my feet are so sore I can barely walk.  It can be 1/2 hour, or 3 hours, doesn't seem to matter, my feet hurt.  I used to be a runner, and I like to hike, so I hope that it helps a lot to lose the weight.  I remember a trip I took 10 years ago to Orlando - day 1 at Sea World, day 2 Magic Kingdom, day 3 Epcot, and day 4 Universal Studios.  By the end of Day 1 I wanted to die, but by end of Day 4, I thought I'd be crippled for life.  That still happens - I'm sure it's related to carrying around 140 extra lbs.

So, help me out - what kinds of aerobic exercises can I do without being on my feet all the time, until I've lost enough that it doesn't hurt so much?  I really could use a stationary bike - going to start looking for one, but don't really have the money right now - I'll look in thrift stores and on freecycle and craigslist.  Any other ideas for cardio that doesn't involve standing or is the bike basically my only option?  I can't afford a fitness club.

I have this same issue but it's more with my right foot.  It feels like all the bones (not my toes) are broken.  It hurts all the time.  I really hope after dropping some poundage it goes away.  I cant wait to start dancing again!

My other issue is my right knee.  Totally feels like its going to bend back the wrong way when I walk.

That's how my feet feel - like all the bones in them are broken.

The knee of yours might be because of the breakdown of stuff between the joints.  I hear that is eased by weight loss, too.

My biggest issues are my feet, but also my hip joints - they hurt a lot too - but mostly it's my dang feet.

Sure can relate to the knee pain and often feet as well.  I find I like my Crocs... ugly... but I like them for the cushiness.  And the fact that I don't have to tie them.... tying my sneakers is a major feat.... oh, the little things I look forward too....

My feet hurt all the time.  I was amazed how much better they feel and how quickly.  I am wearing sandles now.  I haven't been able to wear flat sandles in years.  Your feet will feel better quickly.

Over a year ago I was diagnosed with Planter Fasciitis in both feet . I went through 6 months of physical therapy, acupuncture and home icing and exercises ......all to no avail.

It wasn't long after losing the weight that they started to improve. I can fianlly wear regular shoes again and I'm a happy girl  Grin

I don't think my knees and hips will ever recover from what I did to them - at least, not completely. But everything is much better with almost 100 pounds gone. I'm able to walk 2 miles, do yoga, Zumba, Pilates - nothing I was able to do before.

If walking is out of the question for awhile, Paula's exerciser is a good idea. I would also suggest checking out some DVDs at Walmart. I got my Pilates DVD there, and it's more for toning, which you will need as well. Then you can start walking and doing more exercise when you feel better. (And as you already know, you can't do any of this until about 6 weeks out, so I'd try some light walking if you can. May not can go far, but every little bit helps.)

The bottoms of my feet used to hurt so bad when I got out of bed each morning that I would limp around for about 30 minutes.  My hips hurt and my knees were constantly giving out whilst going up and down stairs.  It truly was scary.  Once I started losing weight - it all started to reverse itself.  I have no problems with any of that anymore.

Water aerobics are good for not putting to much stress on the body.

Rowing is good, so is riding a bike...my favorite. :-)

Hopen2b...Thanks for the link Smiley  If I can't find a low cost stationary bike, that's next Smiley

Thanks all of you - it's promising to know that it is relieved greatly with weight loss.  I love hiking, and I do hike a lot on weekends, sometimes up to 6 miles - but I pay for it for the next two days.  And like you Lynnda, I get up and feel like a cripple for 15 to 30 minutes, then it starts to feel somewhat better.

Patti, thanks for that link too Smiley

I could bearly move in the mornings and if I walked it would kill. Until you get pouched try some orthotics. They may hurt at first but they seemed to help me a little. My knees are even better now. I hurt so much less now. The only thing left for me to handle is gout.

It is super painful. Feels like a broken bone in the accute phase. I have had 8 flairs since 3/2/09. It is being triggered by the weight loss. I just try to be careful.

I just hobble around like a crip - I wore flat sandals today - mistake - I'm hobbling a bit tonight barefoot in my apartment.  Tomorrow I'll wear my North Face hiking sneakers (I can be casual at work sometimes) - they have good support.

Feet pain I can relate so much. It is hard to walk some days. If I do to much walking they swell up like balloons. They also burn. And have numbness in them as well. I have diabetic neuropathy. Also plantar faciitis with heel spurs. I recently had several months of phsyical therapy for my feet and my knees. I had recently had knee surgery to remove a tear in my left knee. And had synvisc injections of 3 in both knees in 3 weeks time. I also had few cortisone shots in my feet also have one of those plantar faciitis brace or splinter thingy. And diabetic shoes and orthotics. I have lost over 50 lbs and havent' had much relieve. I did invest in a recumbent bike. I fell in love with it at physical therapy. So Easter my hubby bought me one. No candy here! The only thing is I don't sweat from using it. I do an hour to hour and 15 minutes on it. Was doing it 5 to 6 days a week But recently been slacking with it. Walking in stores, few blocks. I also even starting riding the bike and doing the wii from it. So i get a total body workout. Then I was able to sweat a little bit. I can't wait to I can get some of this weight off and be on my feet more often. I miss my dvd's from the sweat to the oldies collection. Yep  the crazy guy I spoke to him live on is radio show March of 2008. I have try his way but it hasn't work for me. So hoping the surgery will help me and then I will be able to do his workout as it seems alot of fun and less strain on this old body. lol

Hi - I think plantar faciitis is probably my biggest issue.  My feet and left heel hurt a lot.  Yesterday, I walked a total of about 1 mile, and then stood a lot at a Joan Jett concert, and by the time I got home I could barely walk.  Blah!  I've rested today, and they're better, but geez!  I can't wait until I've lost enough that they don't hurt like that and hinder me from doing what I want.

And congrats on your weight loss so far!

This gets so much better with the weight loss.  I am wearing flat sandles for the first time in years.  My feet no longer hurt and my knees don't hurt going up stairs.  Three cheers for WLS.

Life is precious, no matter the age

« Reply #20 on: September 14, 2009, 06:51:51 PM »

Walking has always been an enjoyment for me, even with excess tonnage.  When I made the decision to move it or loose it because it was time to do the transformation.  I have lost only about 30 lbs sense June but already it has made a huge diff.  I can not walk about 6 blocks, winded, but my feet don't hurt.  I also, on the advice of the foot doctor got sneakers that are on a list that are approved by doc's on the west coast.  Never heard of such a list but it does exist.  My sneakers are New Balance and a specific model, can't remember that.  But not all New Balance are approved.  There are other brands as well.

At my weight I don't have to do much moving to loose several lbs a week, its a matter of eating less which is great.  I have been doing lots of expermentating with the blender and its been kind of fun.

Water aerobic is my favorite way.  We are snow birds and I spend all winter in the pool and love it, however I messed up my left shoulder this past winter but physical theropy this summer has got me ready to go this winter.

The bottomline, move your ass.......

As someone who has done the 3 day 60 mile breast cancer walk, I can tell you that a great pair of shoes makes all the difference when walking.

Out here we have a store (RoadRunner) that will evaluate your walk and recommend shoes. I highly recommend you see if you can find a store near year that does it.

I have a tendency to roll my feel outwards which cause a bit of pain in my hips, believe it or not.

Good shoes can be expensive...but so worth it. The right one and I can walk say...60 miles in 3 days.

I'm definitely going to need to see about finding good shoes - I have NorthFace shoes, which are good normally for hiking, but I don't think they give my feet enough support.  and there's the heel issue along with the inflamation of both feet.  Soon as I have some moola, I'll be looking.  There is a shoe place nearby that fits shoes to your walk and posture.

Here is the link to the list that was given to me and my wife from the foot doctor.  I can't tell you how happy my feet are with the new balance, maybe other as well, but these work for me.  Before I could only walk a couple of block and my feet started to hurt in my SAS.  I walked about 12 blocks yesterday and they were very happy little piggies.  I also have a pair of chako's (sp) and my feet are happy as well to walk in.  I'll need those in southern california this winter.

Here are the recommendation for walking.  There are other recommendation for other activities as well.

I also had plantar faciitis.  My doctor recommended wearing heals.  I thought this was COMPLETELY unintuitive.  BUT - it worked.  I didn't wear heals...not at 300+, but I bought several wedges and I no longer had incredibly painful feet at the end of the day.

I also did invest in a good quality, supportive shoe to work out in that had tons of support mid foot.

Since losing this is no longer a problem at all - I wear regular shoes, flip flops and go bare foot freely.  Loving it.
