I'm a newbie having my RNY middle of next week.  Don't have the date yet.  I have a trip planned to New York City with 2 of my FF, when I'm 7 weeks out.  Will it be a drag for me to live in a hotel for 5 days, sight see, and find the right food to eat?  Wondering if I should post pone the surgery till after the holidays.  Any thoughts are extremely welcome.

Well, there are lots of ready to drink shakes and such you can get like protein soup mix, and protein puddings, so you will have options. You'll likely still be on mushy stuff, but I think they let me have tilapia on that phase and scrambled egg with cheese and cottage cheese and you can usually find that out and about as side dish.  I had my surgery right before Christmas and my birthday, so it was kind of weird going to Christmas dinner, but I wanted it done and I am glad I did.  The first phase doesn't last forever.  It might actually even be nice living in a hotel for 5 days and not having to worry about housework!  Smiley

I travel for my job and would likely need to start some travel about Week 4, but just for a day or two a week. I've been advised it's important to get up and walk around the plane about every half hour - if possible. There are also some limits on how much they want you to lift (some say 10lbs is the limit for a few months). With TSA restrictions, I'm still trying to determine what food is allowed. I'm hoping some liquids and powders, etc are allowed with doctor's orders.

I'm also going to make sure I stay in hotel rooms with a fridge that are located near a decent grocery store. The days of grabbing a quick bite of Fast Food will be gone for good!

NYC for 5 days might be a tall order, but I assume by 7 weeks you will have more energy than I would at 4. The recovery time seems to vary by the individual, so depending on when you buy your ticket, you might wish to pay extra for an unrestricted fare. Any type of last minute change these dys on an economy fare will cost you dearly.

I never have an issue with my protein powders and supplements when I travel.

If I'm going on an extended trip I just FedEx or UPS my stuff to save lugging it through the airport

If they have a fridge check out Gelatein.

It should be good even on clear liquids.

I would seriously think about either delaying your trip or shortening it to a few days. You don't really know how you will be affected physically and mentally by this surgery. Physically, you could still be in the soft food stage and the least bit amounot of sugar will certainly make you dump (if you are prone to it.)

At 7 weeks you should be fine.  Just stay hydrated.  If it was anything like me I was too scared to eat anything wrong so I traveled with a list of exceptable food items.  Chili and soups in restaurants are good options.

I am in the same boat, but I will be traveling at 6 weeks out from Sweden to the US for three weeks. My surgery date is November 9th.  My surgeon said it would be no problem.  I will pack some post-op friendly snacks and probably some shakes, but I can get more products in the US than I can here.

When I first read your posting, I thought that 5 days in NYC at 7 weeks out would be perfect!  You will have lost a fair amount of weight already and mainly healed from surgery.  There are lots of soft food options everywhere and if you are like me, you may not even be interested in eating.  Your food bill should be very cheap!

I would definitely not postpone your surgery!  It is life changing and you need that as soon as possible!
