I got my bill for my 30 hour hospital stay today - Oh my gosh!

The total billed was $74,645.95! For 30 hours!

Insurance paid $11,000, my cost nothing!

Amazing...

I never did understand how hospitals and insurance companies work out the billings/payments.  The bill always seems to be over-inflated compared to the final settlement.  I'm thinking they must take the difference as a tax deduction or something.  Crazy!

Leslie, it's called "contracted rates." Insurance companies contract with hospitals and other health care providers for lower fixed rates in return for limiting the health providers that their members can use (hence, the difference between in-network and out-of-network benefits). Health care providers jack up their billed rates to maximize their revenue with contracts that pay a percentage of billed rates. Unfortunately, this system really sticks it to people without insurance coverage. Fortunately, everything in life is negotiable, including a hospital or doctor bill. I negotiated with a hospital to reduce the amount owed on my father-in-law's outstanding balance by 30%. Hope that helps.

It just makes me feel bad for all the people who don't have insurance...man...

I was lucky (20 years of my husband being in the Marine Corps helped). We have great healthcare...but we are so lucky.

The extra money is 'funny money.' It doesn't really exist anywhere except on paper.

OK you scared me for a sec cause the first time I read it I thought you had been back in the hosp for something, whew.  Yeah those billings tend to use what I like to call "creative accounting".

So if my insurance picks up 90%, does anyone know approximately how much I will have to pay out of pocket?
I will even take educated guesses.
thanks

I'd say between $1500 - $5000 on 10% co-pay

Some Bariatric surgery centers charge extra for pre-op tests and aftercare so make sure you choose wisely

You can also negotiate with your center ahead of time so there are no surprises.
