Me and my friend Corey Haim just before he passed

Hi Evaryone!

I am 6 days post op and still feeling the pain!  Working on the first 3 weeks of carnation and clear liquids. Going great so far! I have my first post op check-up next Monday. Started this quest about a year ago with the classes, research, soul searching and going for it. Certainly can't wait for the pain to go away at this point! Along with my gastric bypass i had hyatal hernia surgery.  Must be doing things right since my scale has me down 8 lbs in 6 days! I am so happy to have found this forum and the pod casts today! Those hosts are hilarious!
Im going to poke around on here for a whilee and get educated! I will beef up my profile later this week!

Happy Birthday to YOU!  YEAH! Cheesy  Now you will have two birthdates to celebrate and trust me...you will.  It really is a new birth, with new experiences, new struggles and new accomplishments.  It's like going back to school and having to learn how to live your new life (but the good thing is that we don't get graded, unless you count your lab results).

Hi guys!

Thanks for the great welcome! Spending much time reading posts and watching the pod casts! Once i get my question list ready i am sure ill keep you all busy!! Just a couple quickies:

Reminder...i am post surgery by 10 days

1.   Ive noticed my skin is yellowish around some of my incisions. Is this your basic bruising? The yellowish areas are about the size of baseballs.  Is this something you guys have experienced?

2. My list of clear liquids from the hospital includes G2 (gatorade).  It is very low calorie but has 7 grams of sugar per 8 ounces. It ha sucrose instead oh the hiigh fructose corn syrup.  Are those 7 grrams of sugar ok?  I dont have my dietiician appointment  for another 10 days so i figure i ask you guys.

Thanks

Pete

Bruising?  Yes, remember they did cut you open and moved those laproscopic probes and organs everywhere, of course you are going to bruise but it will go away in a few weeks.

Sugar, try to stay under 3 grams for a while so that you don't dump.  Well, then again you may need a little sugar to clear your bowls (prune juice mixed with plenty of water).  Perhaps you may want to ask your doctor/nutritionist what they would like for you to do.

Kaiser in Northern California had us on jello, strained cream soups for the first few days and then on to a protein drink with less than 3 grams of sugar.  For me (remember everyone is different) the creamy chocolate drinks I used to love before the surgery I could no longer tolerate and had to buy the prepared IsoPure clear protein drinks until I tolerate the other protein drinks again.

The videos are great.  I know that I take my smart phone to work and when I need a reminder before sliding into old habits, I just play one of Btv videos from Utube and remind myself that I'm not alone and to get my rear in gear.  I screw-up a lot, but that's what support groups are great for.

They actually have me Orange Juice the day after my surgery. Thank goodness I knew not to drink it.  Stay away from the gatorade.  You only need that kind of thing if you are an athlete working out in hot weather. Water is your friend.  Crystal Light if you need some flavor, but stay away from the fruit juice flavors, lemonade and orange, initially as they are a little acidic.

Hi Pete,

Powerade Zero has electrolites and 0 carbs.  There is also a drink called Cytrosport (probably not spelled right) that you can get at your local vitamin shoppe, usually in the cold case.  The watermelon is pretty good and they have prot in them.  Stay hydrated!

Hey, Pete, just a question or two (One is never enough, is it? Smiley) I am so darn nosy...

Are you home and being taken care of by somebody loving and kind?

Do you have a good support system? Relatives, friends?

How are you feeling? Are you on full liquids yet?

Just trying to get a handle on your situation...Oh, you put that you had Gastric Bypass, is that a Roux-N-Y?

How are you feeling? Still in pain? I had a lot of pain, some people have none at all...it does get better, so hang in there!

Hope you are doing better,

Leslie

Hi Queenie!

Yup I am very lucky to have a great fiance and family behind me on this venture!  Full support!  Currently I am on liquids and Carnation instant breakfast. Upon discharge, i was given orders to drink roughly 16 hours a day. I start with a 4 ounce carnation instant breakfast. This is alternated with 6 to 8 oz of clear liquids.  The clear liquids can be water, broth, Crystal light, jello, ect.  The papers say "low sugar." that was why i was questioning the low sugar G2. I am consuming 32oz of carnation/2% milk per day along with roughly 48 plus oz of the clear liquids.  I do this until Feb 10th when i see my dietician. Then i will move too the next step of soft foods.  Prior to the surgery, I had gone thru roughly 6 months of pre training prior to surgery. My group would meet once a week. We saw dieticians, psychologists, surgeons ect.

I can not read my doctors hand writing to tell you the specific kind of gastric bypass.  We just always just called it that.  He went in and cut the top part of my stomach off stapling up the old stomach and new small pouch. He then took the small intestines and attached them to the pouch. He also fixed my hiatal hernia while he was at it.  Pain is ok. Currently i feel pain if i have to bend over at all or twist. I feel it if i cough or forget to take tiny sips! Rarely i will get a shooting pain when just sitting there. At times i feel pain around my laproscopic holes or if i rub against the staples. My doctor gave me percocets to take every 4 hours for pain but have not used them much. When i wake up iin morning  i have taken one because i wake up pretty sore. I will take one at night before bed for same reason. I Have not needed any during the day. I have been sleeping in a very comfortable recliner in my "man room". Laying in the flat bed causes some pain still. Plus i am a chronic belly sleeper. I am afraid I could damage something sleeping on my stomach. So far so good. I have my first followup with my doctor tomorrow! Ill let everyone know how it goes tomorrow!

Pete

Sorry for miss spellings. Doing this from my ipod and it seeems like the spell check doesnt work in a forum.

Glad to see  you here Pete. Congrats on starting the next phase of your life!

Sleeping (position) will get easier day by day. I'm not a back sleeper but initially it
helped to place a pillow under the knees then as I graduated to the side I hugged
a pillow against my belly. Before you know it you'll be sleeping in your usuall position.

Hi Peter, I know you didn't have the surgery where I had, but please take a look at this link in regards to what we were given as a guidline so that perhaps you can just learn more and maybe take with you when you see your nutritionist.  This talks about from what to expect, vitamins, food, support groups...it's just something to read and maybe take into consideration.  Sending warm thoughts.
