Roaming in the Gloaming

« on: April 09, 2012, 03:58:32 AM »

I have read that after WLS a person is likely to feel the cold more.

Okay so I get the less insulation as you lose weight principle but why am I so cold now.  I have lost 15lbsince surgery so that cannot be the reason at the moment.  I know I live in Scotland but I was here before surgery and NEVER felt cold like I have since surgery.

Sitting at my desk in the office everyone else is comfortable, but I am thinking of where I can get fingerless gloves and oh how I wish I had spare layers of clothing in the car.

This is crazy ridiculous.  What's happening, any ideas?

Buy a heater for under your desk and bring a sweater...   You are COMPLETELY normal!!!  My "Fat Guy Sweats" stopped immediately after surgery and the "Great Battle for the Thermostat" started shortly thereafter..

I had surgery in 2008 and I am freezing.  It does not matter how hot it is - I am like ice.  Layers.  Always layers.

But why are we cold?  There are many millions of folk out there fatty and skinny men and probably more women of a certain age who "suffer" being hot.  If WLS changes that what is it? What removal, bypass or other is it that make our thermostat change?

I like David was always hot before surgery.  I wore just a cardigan to my mothers funeral in temperatures of -7c.  Today I am happy to sit in the office with the same cardigan on and the temp in here is 21c.

I think our metabolisms slow down to conserve energy, but it's just a crackpot theory. I was cold too and I'm still much cooler than I was pre-surgery when I was having nasty hotflashes all the time due to my liver being a wreck. Layers is really good advice! Always bring a sweater or jacket and heck, gloves, and scarf if you need them!  Kiss

Before I lost weight I was always hot so now I love always being cold.  At least I can put on layers of clothes to get warm.  When your hot, your just miserable.

I couldn't agree more...I don't know that I am cold ALL the time, but I certainly don't miss being constantly hot and miserable. I actually sleep under the covers with flannel jammies on! It's awesome!

I have 2 sweaters at work - 1 to wear (which is most days) & the other to throw over my legs on the extra cold days.
I always carry a blanket in the car too.

I don't know which is worse - freezing all the time or how miserable I was when I was too warm. Yea... I think I'll take freezing over sweating any day!!

I can't believe how cold I was for months after surgery! Then I joined Hot Yoga, and within 2 weeks I was back to feeling comfortable again - thank goodness cause being cold was just not nice! I think it kick started my metabolism again, I had been on a weight loss stall for a month prior, and about the same time I warmed up, I lost 5 lbs in a week! Doubly happy.

Taken on 11/17 - cut hair as part of tranformation

« Reply #9 on: April 10, 2012, 04:17:13 AM »

A big part is you are not consuming a lot of calories - so your body is in conservation mode - you don't have extra calories to burn on heating your body (well you do - but your body does not like to burn fat).  In the old days you probably ate 2000-3000 cal a day or more so you had lots to burn.

In addition to using things to warm you up - get in more protein - (the more protein on board the more your body will burn fat) - exercise - you should sweat and this will keep you warm later - also if you do enough exercise - it helps to boost metabolism.  Eventually you will add muscle and that helps too.

I don't know yet how much weight I might have lost since the surgery, but it was pretty much an immediate thing, I've been cold CONSTANTLY, today almost two weeks to the day. Now I'm not fighting people when they put the furnace on anymore (lol!)

Someday I hope I regulate.

Happy summer is coming here in New Hampshire.  Hopefully I will warm up!

I like the little heater under the desk idea!

Well I have not had surgery yet however in about 3 weeks I will.  I have lost 84 lbs sense last August and I have been very cold.  We go south for the winter (from northern Washington State) and I was the one wearing heavy long sleeve shirts in 70-80 degree weather, go figure.....  We now home and I'm wearing a heavy long sleeve shirt, a vest and a heavy coat to stay warm.  My wife is hanging her head out the window of the car to stay cool and I'm just right.  course we still have snow around our area but none the less I'm cold where normally I would be happy in short sleeved shirts and a vest.

Net Sunday at church I'm wearing the same clothing but I'm also bring in a stadium blanket for my legs.  Thank goodness I wear compression socks or my legs below my knees would really be cold.

I take it as a sign that I'm doing well in my quest.  Bring on the cold!!!!  Put on more clothing and turn up the heater, be damd the cold.......

I was freezing all the time until recently when North Texas jumped right into early summer temps. Now I am very comfortable. We keep our air conditioner set at 79 degrees, so I am actually getting a little warm by the time it kicks in. If it is less than 75 degrees, I need a sweater. All you frozen people from up north are welcome to come here and thaw out!!

Hey Cheryl!   Grin  I HATE being cold!  New Hampshire can be cold even in the middle of summer.  The only thing that I like now is that I am not a sweaty, smelly, mess when it gets luke warm out.  I used to sweat profusely if it got even a tad bit warm...

Also... I have to say that every time I call our mortgage company in Texas, I just LOVE talking to them!  Everyone is REALLY nice!  I have always said that some day I will visit down there.  The only thing that is keeping me is my fear of big spiders.  The spiders up here stay nice and (pretty) small.  They don't have time to get too big as summer is so short!

Have a great weekend!

This is so interesting - this is the first I've heard of people being cold (I'm relatively new to all of this and no one has mentioned it in the meetings I've been to). I'll be curious to see if I have the same reaction. My surgery is planned for 2/14/13. I'm often hot, so being cold will be welcome - you can always put a sweater on!   Cheesy

I went from burning up to freezing..  I've found silk long johns are amazing, but a simple relief when I get numb is to wash my hands in warm water, making sure to get my wrists under the water.  It warms me right up!
