Life is precious, no matter the age

« on: May 10, 2012, 01:39:17 PM »

Well, I'm in the count down by the hr now.  This coming Tuesday is my day for a change in my life.  I"m so ready for this and can't wait to be on the other side.  Course I'm on the nervous side now as well, but as I read, there would be something wrong if I wasn't feeling that way.   Doing well with the liquid diet, but baby food is going to taste so good by the end of next week.  Getting tired of the same menu.  Have all my pills ready that I'll be taking after surgery along with supplements.  Packing up my bag tomorrow night and headed for Spokane Saturday to spend with my daughters and grand-daughter.  My brother, an MD, is flying up from Denver to be with me and his wife is going to stay a few days with my wife and I to make sure I'm all set when I get home.   My wife is blind so there are some challenges, small at best, we want to make sure things are set to help me, eating manly, for a few days.

My support has been over the top.  I have family, many high school friends, church members and many from the RV park where we spend the winter (snowbirds).  I post on Facebook and I'll get 30 or so comments of likes.  We talked to the NP the other day at the doctor office and she said that people who come in alone, without spouse support have a high rate of divorce.  I thought that was interesting.

How are you feeling so far Doc?  Did you have any issue along the way after surgery?

Thanks to all of you for your support as well....  It really has been very easy for me.

Toni, did you make it over to desert this past winter?

I'm doing great - tomorrow is 4 months for me (I'll post an update on stats) - I had no problems post surgery - my only issue was related to anesthesia - I've had very few issues (e.g. no dumping, hair loss, foamies, etc.) - I have been focused on getting in hydration, protein, vitamins, etc.  I have tolerated all kinds of food and my tastes have not changed (just the quantity and type of food) - I have been really staying away from refined food and fat - though I do essential fatty acids (3-6-9) and artificial sweetners.  A mild level of constipation but that is partially because of the high iron level I'm taking (I was anemic and low iron before the surgery and it has not resolved itself yet). I also walk almost everyday and have since surgery - I think if you follow the protocols it really does help -

Yes Doc, I am now a week out after my surgery and never did have any pain and likewise focused on hydration and supplements at this point.  I had an issue last wed evening (day 2 AS) my B/P dropped to 53/35 and they stuck me into CCU for a couple of days. they think their might have been a small bleeder and with the huge load of Lovenox they gave be before along with the residual Coumadin I had on board might have been the issue.  Anyway, not a big thing, whey just gave me 4 units of new blood and that thickened things up and all is well.  The Lovenox and Coumadin have been an issue for few weeks  pre-op.  I have 3 different doc's who are wanting something different and I and my primary physician are somewhat caught in the middle.  Even the pharmacist and the Doc got into a tiff as to what was the correct thing to do.  This is nuts....   Last Friday while still in CCU a group of pharmacist students came through and we were all talking about Coumadin.  The head of the WSU school of Pharmacy said that the new guidelines that just came out says that Coumadin should only be given for 6 months after a PE as long as it stabilized or if you have another PE or stroke, then its lifetime.  I have been on this stuff for over 2 years now.  Time to get to the bottom....

The surgery went very well.  The doc said that because of all the weight I had lost pre-op (102lbs) it was a very easy surgery.  I had "0" issue with anesthesia and on day 2, I was up walking the halls at at pretty good clip.

This biggest issue that I have ran across, not really an issue, the word "Full".  It means something very different from what I remembered full to be.  Speaking of full, guess it time to get my shake out and start sipping that today.  Been sitting here sipping water "like a good boy".  i'm thinking I'll have 3 pancakes, side of sausage and 3 eggs all washed down with 2 cups of coffee, however all wrapped conveniently available in one little 2 oz cup.  What will man think of next.....

Congrats on the surgery and with dealing with the challenges of modern medicine.  Sounds like you are off to a good start - now the fun begins!
