Life is precious, no matter the age

« on: May 21, 2012, 12:22:52 PM »

I"m so glad I had surgery in spite of learning to eat.  My sleeve is keeping my on tract.  Many of the concerns I have read on the posts are valid, but not show stoppers.  Yes, you have second thoughts, yes you get nervous, yes you have bodely issue pre-op but in the end, all that does not really matter.  You will not know that however until you have been through the process.  The biggest single thing I would encourage everyone is to have friends and family around you and above all, make a commitment to yourself this is your life and you want to be around for those friends and family because someday they may/will need you.....

I know several friends and family members for that matter, that do not have the opportunity that many of us have had.  WLS is expensive and should be offered to anyone who has the need, a true need, without worrying about costs.  Why would we let one person die because they couldn't afford this life saving and long range cost savings procedure.  Its cheaper to let us die than correct the issue, makes no sense to me.  You all know its not just because we eat to excess, there is way more to the story and most just don't get the real issue.   So what is our real worth?Huh

Yes, the issue of evacuating I can also right a chapter on.  I"m now a week out of surgery and feeling great but a little sluggish.  In my case my B/P went to the basement the next day and they put me in CCU, thats where all the bariatric patients go if they need something else.  In fact they were going to discharge me that late afternoon.  The problem was they had me on a ton of blood thinner and there was a little bleeder which be very normal, but with very thin blood it took advantage.  So after 4 units of new blood to get the clotting going, it all turned out very well.

For me this has been a very smooth transition but my get up and go has suffered a little because of the B/P thing, but that will be coming back.

Water is never ending but working towards the 64oz goal.  I call what I'm eating now real food compared to the 2 week liquid diet.  Next week mr. blinder and I will be have a thing.

Thanks all of you have have posted to my notes.  You are also my friends and I wish I could meet each of you some day.

Congratulations!  Excellent observations!  I found the best way to get the water in was to take a drink every time a commercial came on TV.  It got me in the habit, kept me hydrated and was just far enough apart to make taking another sip possible.

Sounds like, even after a few issues, you are doing great, and are going to be around for a long time to look after that precious little one in your arms in your profile pic.

Congrats again - I have taken to drinking Celestial seasons zinger teas (they are fruit type) with a little bit of sweetner in a thermal cup - I find that this last me about an hour and the heat keeps me from drinking it too fast and if I dring 2-3 of the mugs that is about 24-36 oz - with my protein drinks (I make them 16 Oz) which also take an hour - I get in my hydration and a good amount of protein.

Congratulations. Glad you are doing better. Some of us had to add eletrolyte drinks to our diet to keep our BPs in normal range and keep them from dipping too low.  I like Powerade Zero, but some folks have said they hate it and used G2. Cheers to a fast and full recovery.  Cool

Yes Toni as you know I started this in june of 2009 and its so wonderful to have made my first goal.  I so disappointed in Oct of 2009 when I had the Pulmonary Embolism, but this past summer all was clear and I got to moved ahead once more.

This week and half has been interesting; learning to drink water, not gulping; sending things down slowly, puddings, water, chewable supp's; and most importing keeping a schedule.  I do have to remember to eat when its time.  I do have to say one thing, the head hunger thing is still a little there, maybe more of a habit thing, i.e., while making a cheese sandwich yesterday for my wife (she is blind, can do it but it takes a long time and I don't mind at all) there was a little crumb of cheese and my hand went down to get it and pop it into my mouth, but as has been the case my brain kicked in and said no.  I wasn't hungry either, it was just a reaction.

I'm still off 6 of the 8 pills I was on pre-op.  I'm only taking my gout pill in the morning and Coumadin at night which will be going away in about 2 months.  Grinding is a pain, but okay for now.  I put Crystal Light powder, mix and toss down and sip water.  No bad at all.  Never had a blood sugar problem but they have me testing, I'm guess so it doesn't get too low but they have been running from 95-104.  My A1C was 5.0 in the hospital.  My blood pressures are running around 125-135 to
75-80 with no meds

All in all, just doing fine and have been over doing it a bit.  I'm so ready to rocket around, but in time......  our lawn looks like the field out front.  Good thing we don't live in town.  I was hopping the moose or elk would stop by and eat it down while we were gone, but nope....

Thank you to all of you how have given me your kind words.  My next step is next Tuesday when I get to move up to Pureed foods.....  I've hit the big time.

Sounds like you are dong well - don't go out and do the lawn work too soon though if you have an easy lawn then I guess mowing the lawn could be like going for a walk (my lawn is still a major event, hills and such).  Keep up the good work.
