I survived my medical mission in Africa with ease.... Okay not ease but I still survived.

I've been non existent on the threads for almost two months now because Ive been touring Africa and administering medical aide. The only thing i cold do was post to facebook when i caught a satalite. The entire time I was living in huts and maintaining a not-at-all healthy diet I thought of getting to Internet access to post a topic on here about travel tips.

Since I was quite literally in the middle of the bush with only what I could carry it was clear that I wasn't going to be able to maintain a bariatric diet that was healthy but I survived due to my good ole friend..... ::drum roll:: ...... PROTEIN BARS!

I literally ate protein bars and powdered peanut butter for just under two months. Sure it wasn't as healthy as I should be but it was the only way to get in my protein and not inhale rice/sugar like the rest of my cohorts. Although my situation was a bit dramatic this was my solution to travel eating.... Carrying 150 protein bars and 8 containers of powdered peanut butter.

WHAT ARE YOUR TRICKS WHEN TRAVELING? Any special tips to help us maintain?

Wow Africa - I'm jealous - what countries were you in?

I have done two month long travels - CHINA and a month on the motorcycle - Protein power was essential for me.  I also found edamame to be good - eggs can be gotten in most places - Many will do egg whites - but hard boiled works well if you discard the yolk.

I've never been to China but i would love to get there someday!

We started and stayed in Uganda for most of the trip but also visited Kenya, South Sudan, Ethiopia and Somalia.

Thanks for the tips!

Do you have pictures - those are on my wish list of places to go to!  I used protein bars - but they are so high in fat that I generally only do half - Extend - is not bad (available in the diabetic aisle)

So the powdered peanut butter is good?

I think it is amazing that you spent that much time in Africa helping people - good job Smiley

Unfortunately I have very little pictures. We had military escorts so photographs were not allowed. That was my issue though; the fat content is so high.

The powdered peanut butter isn't bad and it's protein content is awesome.

I did India for a month.....that was HARD too.
I was with very poor people...but even the well-off didn't eat much better. Their staple food was rice - white rice, with lots of liquid (water is cheap, lol).....So, I had 2 large tubs of protein powder....bought eggs from locals for boiled eggs (which I could cook in batches and carry with me).....cashews (grown locally, so quite cheap and available), and bananas (growing everywhere!).

Protein shake for breakfast....
boiled egg, cashews and banana for lunch,
Protein shake mid afternoon
then a little of what the locals were eating for dinner with 2 more boiled eggs...(we were expected to be at a communal dinner and would have offended our hosts if we ducked out)
Some combination of any of the aforementioned stuff for eve snack,

That's practically what I lived on for the month.
I developed a whole new appreciation for fresh vegetables by the time I got home!

I've always been too scared to go to Africa, we get lots of reports of rapes and murders....I have also taught a lot of feamle African refugees - their stories are just so horriffic - I can see why you had/needed the military escort!

Wow! I never traveled for that long or to a place where there wasn't easy access to everything, but I took individual servings of protein powder and some bars with me and some dry roasted edamame - it lasts forever.  Wink How awesome to travel like that and to give medical care. Bravo!  Cool Kiss I don't think the fat content of the bars should be that bad for you considering. Did you have trouble losing on that diet because of the fat content?

Congrats and kudos for helping others less fortunate!

How did you keep the 150 bars from getting all nasty with the heat?

I didn't. Ha! I initially wrapped them in a silver hypothermic blanket and they stayed lovely for about 7 or 8 days and then I pretty much ate melted warped protein bars for ever! I only brought one brand. Powercrunch.... It's like a wafer so it wasnt bad melted. The one supreme bar I brought was almost the hpdeath of me... Terrible when melted, I puked it up... It hit me like a tin of bricks.

Congratulations! Sweat or not, you lost and that is fabulous!  Kiss

My favorite bars these days are Questbars, though I still like Pure Protein, Supreme, Oh Yeah wafers, and many more! I tend to stay with the low carb ones, but Questbars have great nutritional stats - more carbs, but most are fiber and there is no icing so they don't get nasty when heated. T2 loves the heat up the apple pie ones in the microwave for about 10 seconds.  Cool

I keep a large collection of different bars at home, but on the road I carry Questbars..  They actually get BETTER after riding in your pocket for a few hours/days - all warm and slightly sticky - like treats fresh from Grandma's oven!!

As Keilah and David mentioned, Questbars are the BOMB! Even better warmed up a bit. I love them all!

So glad to see you back here, Girl! What an adventure you had! I have to say I love travel and I love helping people, but it takes a special person to give that much of herself to others! Excellent!

Having traveled through Sri Lanka (only 9 days - loved it!) I can attest to the different food that was hard to eat at times. We spent a lot of time wondering what was for our next meal because the last one hadn't been that fulfilling.  Wink

Did you have any medication or suppliment issues? I have this one dang med that I have to crush and put in applesauce to get it down. It's coated so I have to crush it and it is sooooooo nasty. Applesauce and splenda. But applesauce doesn't keep if not refigerated. Anyone got other ideas for that one?

In Africa, I had huge supplement issues. I lost all my vitamins but the multi for the entire trip. African customs wouldn't allow them into the country for some strange reason. So, I took my multi and thankfully had no issues. Ugh. I was sooooo tired though.

What about the prepackaged applesauce that you buy on the grocery shelves? They come in little individual serving sizes and Mott's has a no sugar added version I'm pretty sure.
